The Escape is the outermost boundary of the Zone, guarded by the Military and therefore much quieter than most other areas of the game. Stalkers often refer to the Cordon as the “anteroom” of the Zone. Most beginners stay in the village north of the current military checkpoint in the Cordon until they have enough equipment and experience to venture further into the exclusion zone.

The only defining feature of the Cordon, present in all versions, is the railway bridge located at the center of the map, which divides it into two parts. Depending on the version, it may be either intact or collapsed.
